The Cup, Greatness, Service, and the Ransom for Many
Matthew 20 keeps overturning normal rankings. The vineyard owner is generous beyond what late workers could demand; Jesus predicts again that he will be killed and raised; and when the disciples compete for the best seats, he says greatness in his kingdom looks like service. Then he interprets his own mission: the Son of Man came to serve and to give his life a ransom for many.
A request for the highest seats prompts Jesus to redefine greatness. Kingdom rulers do not imitate Gentile domination; greatness means service, modeled in the Son of Man who came “to give his life a ransom for many.”
Where this fits in the story: Isaiah’s Servant “bears” and gives himself for the many, while exodus/redemption language supplies the ransom concept.
Where Scripture takes it next: the Last Supper will interpret Jesus’ blood as poured out “for many for the remission of sins.”
Evidence boundary: “ransom” language is explicit, but later atonement models should be distinguished from the text’s own statement before one system is treated as the only biblical explanation.
Matthew joins Danielic Son-of-Man authority with servant-shaped self-giving: the one destined for dominion comes not to be served but to serve and die.
The biblical cup often symbolizes an appointed portion, especially suffering/judgment. Jesus' cup language points forward to Gethsemane and his passion while the disciples misunderstand glory.

The Son of Man gives his life as a ransom 'for many,' strongly echoing Isaiah's servant who bears sin, pours out his life, and justifies/bears the sins of many. The wording is not a formal quotation but the conceptual/verbal convergence is major.
Biblical ransom/redemption language supplies a broader conceptual background. The verse itself does not name to whom a ransom is paid, so later payment-to-Satan theories must not be imported into the wording as fact.
