Matthew's 'phylacteries' refer to a Jewish practice rooted in Torah commands to bind God's words/signs on hand and between the eyes. Jesus' criticism targets ostentatious enlargement for display, not the mere existence of Scripture-reminder practices.

Garment fringes/tassels are commanded in Torah as reminders of God's commands. Jesus condemns enlarging them for status display, not Torah's command itself. Jesus’ criticism targets conspicuous enlargement for status rather than the Torah command to wear covenant-reminder fringes itself.

Torah commands garment fringes as reminders of God’s commands; Jesus condemns religious leaders who enlarge those fringes for public status, criticizing performative display rather than the command itself.

The greatest-as-servant teaching continues Matthew's repeated kingdom reversal: greatness is humility and service, not status.

Jesus’ saying that the humble will be exalted closely parallels James’s “humble yourselves… and he shall lift you up.”
