Redeeming What Belongs to God – The Substitution Principle
As God looked ahead to the Israelites' entry into the Promised Land, He gave instructions for what they were to do when they arrived. Every firstborn male—both human and animal—was to be dedicated to the Lord. However, there was a distinction: the firstborn of unclean animals, like donkeys, had to be redeemed with a lamb. If it was not redeemed, it was to be killed. Similarly, every firstborn human son had to be redeemed.
This law reinforced a vital truth: God had the right of ownership over what He had spared. But it also introduced the principle of substitution. A lamb could take the place of another. Life for life. Redemption through the blood of an innocent in the place of the guilty.
