The Rich Young Man: Commandments, Treasure, and Following Jesus
Matthew 19 brings Jesus back to Genesis. Asked about divorce, he does not begin with a loophole but with creation: male and female, joined as one flesh. He then receives children, confronts a wealthy commandment-keeper with the cost of following him, and shocks the disciples by saying a camel through a needle's eye is easier than wealth-secured kingdom entry—yet what is impossible with people is possible with God.
A wealthy young man asks about eternal life and is led from commandments to the deeper issue of allegiance. Jesus tells him to give to the poor, treasure in heaven, and follow him; the man leaves sorrowful because possessions possess his heart.
Where this fits in the story: the Decalogue and neighbor-love remain explicit, while Matthew 6 has already warned that treasure locates the heart and that two masters cannot be served.
