Then came commandments six through nine—prohibitions against murder, adultery, stealing, and bearing false witness. These were not merely moral rules to follow but reflections of God's own character. To murder is to destroy one made in the image of God. To commit adultery is to violate a sacred covenant, just as spiritual adultery defiles our relationship with God. To steal is to distrust God’s provision. To lie is to distort truth—something impossible for God to do.

The tenth commandment—“You shall not covet” (v. 17)—dives into the heart. It isn't about action, but desire. God wasn’t only concerned with what His people did; He cared about what they longed for. Coveting is the seed of many other sins. It breeds discontent, envy, and rebellion. God called them to be content with His provision.
