Treasure, the Eye, and the Two Masters
Matthew 6 moves kingdom righteousness into motives. Giving, praying, and fasting can be good acts done for the wrong audience. Jesus redirects disciples to the Father who sees in secret, gives them a prayer centered first on God's name and kingdom, warns that wealth can become a rival master, and teaches trust instead of life-consuming worry.
Jesus moves from religious performance to allegiance. Treasure reveals the heart’s location; the eye image speaks to how one sees and values; and the final contrast makes the issue explicit—no one can serve both God and mammon.
Where this fits in the story: wisdom literature repeatedly contrasts durable divine treasure with wealth that disappears, while Torah insists that Israel’s ultimate service belongs to God alone.
Where Scripture takes it next: the rich young man in Matthew 19 and Judas in Matthew 26 place money and allegiance under narrative pressure.
Evidence boundary: “single eye” has generated proposals involving generosity, moral focus, and healthy vision. The generosity background is plausible, but the metaphor should not be reduced to a secret technical idiom without evidence. Mammon is wealth/personified wealth, not the proper name of an independent demon in this passage.
Jewish and wider ancient traditions associate the eye with character; 'good eye' can denote generosity and 'evil eye' stinginess/envy. Because Matthew places the saying between treasure and Mammon, generosity is a serious contextual option but not the only proposed interpretation.
Jesus tells disciples to store treasure in heaven rather than on earth; 1 Timothy tells the rich to become rich in good works and thereby lay up a good foundation for the future. Both relocate security from possessions to faithful life before God.
Matthew 6 warns against serving Mammon and anxiously pursuing food, drink, and clothing; 1 Timothy 6 joins godliness with contentment and warns that the determination to be rich produces spiritual danger. Both expose wealth as a false source of security.
