Justice and Mercy in the Community – God’s Call to Righteous Living
As God continues laying the foundation for a holy nation, He now turns His attention to how His people are to treat one another in daily life—especially in legal and relational matters. The opening verses of Exodus 23 provide a series of instructions centered on truth, justice, and mercy. God warns against spreading false reports or joining the crowd in doing wrong. He forbids perverting justice by favoring the poor or the powerful and commands fairness, even toward one’s enemies.
God’s standard of righteousness is not limited to actions—it reaches into motives. He tells His people not to deny justice to the poor or to show favoritism, and even to return a stray donkey or ox to an enemy. These commands place notable emphasis on truthful testimony, impartial justice, practical help even for an enemy, and protection of the resident alien. Ancient Near Eastern legal traditions also contain varied restraints and protections, so the distinctiveness of Exodus should be evaluated law by law rather than reduced to a simple Israel-versus-vengeful-neighbors contrast.
