Remember the Lord in the Wilderness
Deuteronomy 8:1–6 is the movement “Remember the Lord in the Wilderness.” Read it inside Moses’ final covenant instruction to Israel on the eastern side of the Jordan as the people prepare for life in the land. The section opens with: “All the commandments which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers.” It closes with: “Therefore thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him.”
Within the book’s larger story, this section advances several important biblical threads. Bread from Heaven: Manna teaches that human life depends on every word from God; Jesus quotes this lesson in the wilderness. Wilderness Testing and Faithfulness: Forty years of hunger, manna, testing, and discipline explain the wilderness as a school of dependence on God’s word.
