The Blessed Way: Delight, Torah, and the Fruitful Tree
Psalm 1 opens the Psalter by placing the reader before two ways of life. The blessed person refuses the counsel and habits of the wicked and instead delights in the LORD’s Torah—God’s instruction—and keeps returning to it. The tree beside channels of water pictures a life made stable and fruitful by continual dependence on God rather than by favorable circumstances.
Where this fits in the Bible: the two-ways pattern grows out of covenant wisdom such as Deuteronomy’s choice between life and death and resembles Jeremiah 17’s contrast between the cursed shrub and the tree planted by water. Christian readers can also see Jesus as the one perfectly righteous human being, but Psalm 1 is not directly quoted by the New Testament as a prophecy of Jesus. The safest Christ-centered reading is therefore canonical: Jesus embodies the righteous way perfectly and brings his people into a life shaped by God’s word.
