At the Lord’s Feet: Mary, Martha, Service, and the One Necessary Thing
Martha welcomes Jesus and becomes overwhelmed by service while Mary sits at the Lord’s feet listening to his word. Jesus does not condemn hospitality; he exposes anxious distraction that loses the person being served.
Where this fits in the story: sitting at a teacher’s feet is disciple language. Luke therefore gives Mary a recognizably disciple-shaped posture centered on receiving Jesus’ teaching.
The passage also belongs beside the Good Samaritan: active mercy and attentive hearing are not enemies. Luke places them adjacent so readers cannot reduce discipleship to either activism without listening or listening without love.
