The Seventy Weeks
Few passages have generated more charts than Daniel 9:24–27. Gabriel speaks of “seventy weeks” decreed for Daniel’s people and holy city, with goals that include finishing transgression, dealing with sin and iniquity, bringing everlasting righteousness, completing vision/prophecy, and anointing what is most holy. The period is then divided into seven, sixty-two, and one week, with an anointed figure, rebuilding, a cutting off, destruction, covenant language, stopped sacrifice, and abomination/desolation.
The starting point must be the text’s own exile setting. Daniel has been meditating on Jeremiah’s seventy years; Gabriel answers with a transformed seventy-fold period commonly understood as “weeks of years.” Leviticus 25’s sabbatical-year cycles and the seventy-times-seven pattern provide important canonical background.
