1 Kings 17:17–24
In 1 Kings 17:17–24, the narrative focuses on elijah raises the widow’s son. This belongs to the Elijah cycle. Drought, provision, restored life, Carmel, rain, flight, Horeb, and prophetic succession reveal the LORD’s authority over life, weather, worship, kings, and prophets while Israel is being called away from Baal and back to covenant loyalty.
This is a strong narrative mirroring of Elijah and Jesus and is widely treated as deliberate literary reuse: Luke’s raising of a widow’s son follows 1 Kings 17 closely and reproduces the Septuagint wording “he gave him to his mother,” while Jesus’ direct command heightens the authority displayed.
Elijah raises a widow’s child, providing an important prophetic precedent for restored child-life. Luke has already evoked Elijah in the raising at Nain; Jairus’ daughter continues and intensifies the life-over-death pattern around Jesus.
Jesus’ raising of Jairus’s daughter belongs to the biblical resurrection pattern already established by Elijah’s raising of a dead child, while displaying greater direct authority. The correspondence is meaningful typology/narrative mirroring, not an inspired statement that Jesus is simply a replay of Elijah.
