The Crucified King: Forgiveness, Mockery, Paradise, Darkness, Curtain, and Death
Jesus is crucified between criminals under the inscription “THE KING OF THE JEWS.” Rulers and soldiers mock his saving claims; one criminal joins the abuse while the other recognizes Jesus’ innocence and kingdom and receives the promise of paradise. Darkness covers the land, the temple veil tears, and Jesus commits his spirit to the Father.
Where this fits in the story: rejected king, righteous sufferer, sacrifice, forgiveness, temple, darkness, Psalm language, and kingdom hope converge at the cross. Luke’s passion themes reach their narrative center.
