Girded, Burning, Watching: The Master Who Serves and the Steward Who Must Be Faithful
Jesus pictures servants dressed for action with lamps burning, awaiting a master whose return time is unknown. In a startling reversal, the faithful master will gird himself and serve the watching servants. Peter’s question then opens a second image of stewardship and accountability.
Where this fits in the story: Passover readiness, household stewardship, watchfulness, and coming judgment all form the background atmosphere. Luke’s later Last Supper scene echoes the servant-lord reversal when Jesus says, “I am among you as he that serveth.”
