The LORD Is My Portion and My Inheritance
The language of portion, cup, lot, and boundary lines comes from inheritance vocabulary. Instead of defining security chiefly by land or possessions, the worshiper says the LORD himself is his portion and holds his lot. “Pleasant places” therefore express received goodness under God’s care.
New Testament believers are promised an incorruptible inheritance, so 1 Peter offers a meaningful canonical extension. Yet Psalm 16:5–6 is not quoted there, and “cup” here should not automatically be turned into Jesus’ cup of suffering. The bridge is the larger biblical movement from God-given inheritance to an inheritance secured for God’s people through Christ.
