The Messiah Must Suffer—and His Followers Must Take Up the Cross
Peter identifies Jesus as “The Christ of God,” but Jesus immediately redefines messianic expectation around suffering: the Son of man must be rejected, killed, and raised the third day. Then discipleship is shaped by the same cross-pattern—deny self, take up the cross daily, and follow.
Where this fits in the story: Luke will not allow “Messiah” to mean only visible triumph. The royal promise must be read together with suffering, rejection, and resurrection.
