Count the Cost: Family, Cross, Possessions, and Salt
Large crowds hear severe discipleship language: allegiance to Jesus must outrank even the closest family claims, disciples must carry the cross, builders and kings must count cost, possessions cannot be allowed mastery, and salt must retain its character.
Where this fits in the story: covenant loyalty has always demanded ultimate allegiance to God. Jesus now places following himself at the center of that costly loyalty.
A translation caution helps: the Semitic-style “hate” contrast functions comparatively in this allegiance setting; Luke is not overturning commands to honor parents or love neighbor.
