The Son in His Father’s House
After completing everything according to the Law, Mary and Joseph returned to Nazareth. Jesus grew strong, filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon Him.
The wider biblical story comes into focus here. Luke explicitly places twelve-year-old Jesus in Jerusalem for Passover, situating his first recorded words within Israel’s central redemption feast. Luke’s description of Jesus growing in wisdom/favor closely recalls Samuel’s growth in favor with God and people, strengthening the Samuel-Jesus childhood parallel. The 'must' (dei) of Jesus’ relation to his Father introduces a major Lukan motif of divine necessity that later governs his journey, suffering, resurrection, and fulfillment of Scripture.
