Passage Overview · Free · Luke 6:17–26
Blessed Are You Poor—Woe to You Rich
Jesus blesses the poor, hungry, grieving, and rejected, then pronounces corresponding woes on the rich, full, laughing, and socially praised. Luke’s version is strikingly concrete. The passage announces a kingdom reversal that challenges ordinary measures of security and success.
Where this fits in the story: Hannah and Mary sing of God raising the lowly and bringing down the proud; the prophets warn wealthy oppressors; Luke repeatedly pairs poverty and wealth with questions of trust, justice, generosity, and repentance.
