Priestly Portions and YHWH as Aaron’s Inheritance
YHWH assigns Aaron and his sons portions of Israel’s holy gifts, firstfruits, devoted things, and firstborn redemption. Their support comes from the sanctuary work for which they have no ordinary tribal land inheritance.
Numbers 18 assigns holy gifts, devoted things, firstborn and tithes within priestly/Levitical support structures, complementing Leviticus 27's sanctuary-property rules. Numbers therefore places devoted property inside the broader priestly economy, though it does not settle every difficult interpretive question raised by Leviticus 27’s herem language.
Leviticus 2:13 and Numbers 18:19 both use covenant-of-salt language. The phrase strongly links salt with durable covenant obligation, though Leviticus itself does not explain the symbol.
Numbers 3 redeems the 273 excess firstborn at five sanctuary shekels each; Numbers 18 later gives five shekels as the standing redemption valuation for a firstborn son from one month old.
Numbers 5 says holy contributions brought to the priest belong to him; Numbers 18 later gives the fuller priestly-due system, assigning holy gifts to Aaron and his sons. The later chapter expands a brief priestly-rights statement into the fuller covenant support system for Aaron’s house.
