A person who has wronged someone must confess, repay the full loss, and add one fifth. If the injured person has no surviving kinsman to receive repayment, the restitution goes to YHWH through the priest. Numbers therefore joins worship to repaired human relationships rather than allowing sacrifice to replace restitution.

Leviticus 5:14–16 Numbers 5:5–8

Leviticus 5 connects reparation with repayment and an added fifth in cases involving misuse of holy things. Numbers 5 develops the same reparative logic by requiring confession, full restitution, and an added fifth for wrongs against another person. The later passage extends the Torah’s principle that guilt can require material repair as well as ritual action.
