You, O LORD, Remain Forever—Restore Us
Everything visible has changed except God’s reign: “Thou, O LORD, remainest for ever; thy throne from generation to generation.” The book ends by asking the deepest question exile can ask—if God reigns, why does abandonment feel so long?—and then prays, “Turn thou us unto thee… renew our days as of old.”
The ending is deliberately unresolved. Lamentations does not manufacture a happy ending before restoration arrives. Yet the prayer itself is hope: survivors still address the LORD as King and believe that renewal must come from him. Later Scripture develops that restoration hope through return from exile, renewed covenant promises, the Davidic Messiah, resurrection, and finally new creation. Those later developments complete a canonical trajectory; they should not be read backward as though Lamentations 5 already spells out every later step.
