Passersby Mock the City Once Called Perfect
People passing the ruined city clap, hiss, and “wag their head” at Daughter Jerusalem. The city once praised as beautiful and joyful has become an object of public scorn. Verse 17 insists that this collapse did not catch God by surprise: the LORD has done what he had warned “in the days of old.”
This passage also has an important New Testament afterlife. Matthew 27:39 and Mark 15:29 describe people passing the crucified Jesus and shaking their heads at him. Scholars have noted unusually close verbal and situational overlap with Lamentations 2:15, especially in Matthew. The Gospels do not label this “a fulfillment of Lamentations,” so the safest classification is a strong allusion/intertext: Jesus, the rejected King, enters the mocked-sufferer imagery that once surrounded ruined Jerusalem.
