Mocked King and Crucified Messiah
Matthew 27 shows the Scriptures converging around Jesus' death in ways both clear and complicated. Psalm 22 is unmistakable in the mockery and Jesus' cry. The thirty pieces of silver draw on Zechariah while Matthew names Jeremiah, creating a real composite-citation question. At Jesus' death the temple veil tears, the earth shakes, tombs open, and a Roman centurion confesses him as God's Son.
Where this fits in the story: righteous-sufferer Psalms and Servant imagery supply the scriptural vocabulary through which the passion is understood, while royal mockery creates brutal irony around Jesus’ true identity.
Where Scripture takes it next: the resurrection overturns the mock verdict, and Jesus declares that all authority in heaven and earth is his.
Evidence boundary: details such as the shape of the cross, exact nail placement, or thorn species may be historically interesting but are not specified sufficiently to carry theology.
Lamentations pictures passersby mocking ruined Jerusalem, clapping, hissing, and wagging their heads; Matthew portrays passersby at the cross reviling Jesus and shaking their heads. The scene strongly recalls Lamentations even while Psalm 22 remains another major Passion background.
Lamentations describes the afflicted man with gall and wormwood bitterness; Matthew’s Passion narrative gives Jesus gall. The lexical overlap may add a secondary Lamentations resonance, but Psalm 69:21 remains the clearer direct background for the crucifixion drink.
