Leviticus 24 states the lex talionis principle—life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth—in a judicial setting. Deuteronomy 19 applies the same proportionality formula to false witnesses, showing that the principle functions as measured legal justice rather than a command for private revenge.

The “eye for eye” principle belongs to Torah’s judicial framework of proportional justice. Jesus cites it while teaching disciples how to respond personally to injury, insult, coercion, and demands without retaliation.

Jesus explicitly invokes Torah’s two-or-three-witness principle in the escalating process of confronting sin within the community, adapting courtroom corroboration to disciplined communal accountability.

Torah’s rule that a matter be established by multiple witnesses forms a canonical backdrop to 1 John’s coordinated testimony of the Spirit, the water, the blood, and ultimately God concerning his Son.

Jezebel weaponizes Israel’s legal procedures by arranging false witnesses and a capital accusation, turning Torah’s safeguards for truthful testimony into instruments of judicial murder.
