From Retaliation to Nonretaliation and Generosity
Matthew 5 does not present Jesus as throwing away the Old Testament. He says the opposite: he has not come to abolish the Law and the Prophets but to fulfill them. Then he takes familiar commands about murder, adultery, truthfulness, justice, and neighbor-love and drives kingdom righteousness into the heart, relationships, speech, retaliation, and even love of enemies.
Where this fits in the story: Exodus, Leviticus, and Deuteronomy place lex talionis inside judicial settings. Reading those laws in context prevents Jesus from being misrepresented as correcting a Torah command that had simply taught vengeance.
Where Scripture takes it next: Jesus’ own passion displays refusal to answer violence with retaliatory violence, while apostolic teaching later echoes enemy-directed generosity and nonvengeance.
Evidence boundary: Roman “go the second mile” background is historically plausible within imperial requisition practices, but detailed reconstructions of an exact one-mile legal statute should be sourced carefully rather than repeated from sermons as fact.
Jesus quotes the “eye for eye, tooth for tooth” formula and then teaches His disciples how to respond personally to injury, insult, coercion, and requests. The Exodus rule belongs to judicial proportionality; Jesus addresses personal nonretaliation and generosity.
Leviticus gives the lex talionis within a judicial setting of proportional justice; Jesus cites that formula before teaching disciples how to respond personally to injury, insult, coercion, and demands without retaliation.
The “eye for eye” principle belongs to Torah’s judicial framework of proportional justice. Jesus cites it while teaching disciples how to respond personally to injury, insult, coercion, and demands without retaliation.

Lamentations commends the sufferer who gives his cheek to the one who strikes him and quietly bears reproach; Jesus tells disciples struck on one cheek to turn the other also. The wording and posture create a plausible scriptural echo without requiring a direct quotation claim.
