Ananias and Sapphira: Lying to the Holy Spirit
Acts 5:1–11 centers on ananias and sapphira: lying to the holy spirit. Ananias and Sapphira sell property but deceptively present part of the price as though it were the whole gift. Peter says the lie is to the Holy Spirit and to God; each dies after confrontation, and great fear falls on the church.
The wider biblical story comes into focus here. The episode recalls severe holiness judgments such as Achan in Joshua 7 while advancing Acts’ high theology of the Spirit: lying to the Spirit is described as lying to God. It follows the ideal sharing summaries to show that the renewed community is not immune from covenant-breaking deceit.
