Creation Groans, the Spirit Helps, God Works toward Glory
Paul widens the horizon from individual suffering to the entire creation. Creation has been subjected to futility and bondage to corruption and now groans like a woman in labor, waiting for the revealing of God’s children. Genesis 3 supplies a strong backdrop for creation’s curse and corruption, while the language of futility also resonates with Ecclesiastes. Paul’s image, however, is not merely decay—it is labor pain, suffering oriented toward birth and liberation.
Believers groan too, waiting for adoption in its completed form, “the redemption of our body.” The Spirit likewise helps weakness and intercedes when words fail. Romans 8:28 then affirms God’s providential purpose, but the Greek textual tradition has a small variation over whether “God” is explicitly named as grammatical subject; either way the surrounding argument makes God’s purposeful action central.
