The Risen Jesus, the Catch, and Breakfast by the Sea
Seven disciples fish through the night and catch nothing until the unrecognized Jesus directs them to cast the net again. The enormous catch—153 large fish—does not tear the net, and the beloved disciple recognizes the Lord. Later interpreters have proposed many symbolic meanings for 153, including Jerome’s claim about the number of fish species and mathematical number patterns. None is securely established by the text, so the number should be treated as a famous open question rather than a hidden code. On shore Jesus already has a charcoal fire, fish, and bread and shares breakfast with the disciples.
