Jesus Weeps and Calls Lazarus Out
Mary comes weeping, mourners follow, and Jesus is deeply moved and weeps. John’s high Christology never cancels Jesus’ real grief. At the tomb Jesus commands the stone removed, prays publicly so the crowd may understand his mission from the Father, and calls Lazarus by name. The dead man comes out still wrapped in grave clothes. This sign points beyond itself: Lazarus is restored to mortal life and will face death again, whereas Jesus’ own resurrection will inaugurate the indestructible life the Gospel has been promising.
