Dedication, the Father’s Hand, and 'I and the Father Are One'
At the Feast of Dedication (Hanukkah), Jesus is challenged to state openly whether he is the Christ. The festival recalls the rededication of the temple after its desecration in the Maccabean period, giving the temple setting additional historical resonance. Jesus points again to his works, describes his sheep as secure in his and the Father’s hand, and concludes, “I and my Father are one.” The statement does not erase the Father-Son distinction elsewhere in John; in context it asserts a profound unity of action and safeguarding that provokes a charge of blasphemy.
