Abounding Love and Blameless Holiness at Christ’s Coming

The first half of the letter resolves into prayer: may God open the way for reunion, may the Lord make the Thessalonians increase and overflow in love for one another and for all people, and may their hearts be established blameless in holiness at the coming of Jesus “with all his saints.”

Where the Old Testament is revealed in the New: Zechariah 14:5 says that the LORD comes “and all the saints with thee.” Paul describes the coming of “our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.” The wording is not introduced as a formal quotation, so it should be classified as a very strong Christological allusion rather than an explicit quotation. Even so, the direction is striking: a prophetic scene of the LORD’s end-time coming is reapplied to the coming of Jesus. That is an important LORD-to-Christ trajectory. The separate question of who the “holy ones” are—angels, redeemed believers, or a broader holy company—remains genuinely disputed and should not be used to weaken the clearer Christological point.
