Warning Against Idolatry and Forgetfulness
Deuteronomy 4:15–31 is the movement “Warning Against Idolatry and Forgetfulness.” Read it inside Moses’ final covenant instruction to Israel on the eastern side of the Jordan as the people prepare for life in the land. The section opens with: “Take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves; for ye saw no manner of similitude on the day that the LORD spake unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire:” It closes with: “(For the LORD thy God is a merciful God;) he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them.”
Within the book’s larger story, this section advances several important biblical threads. Land, Inheritance, Exile, and Return: Moses foresees idolatry, scattering among the nations, seeking God again, and covenant mercy—an early exile-and-return trajectory.
