No Place to Hide from Judgment
In the fifth vision Amos sees the Lord standing by or upon the altar and commanding the sanctuary structure to be struck. The judgment then expands through a series of impossible escape attempts: dig into Sheol, climb to heaven, hide on Carmel, sink into the sea, or go into captivity—the LORD’s reach extends everywhere. The imagery resembles the Bible’s broader confession that no region of creation lies outside God’s presence or rule, but here that truth is frightening rather than comforting. The passage also closes the arc of false sanctuary security: the altar itself cannot shield people from the God whose covenant they have violated.
