Nicodemus and Birth from Above
Nicodemus comes at night acknowledging that Jesus’ signs show God is with him, but Jesus immediately presses beyond admiration to the necessity of being born “again/from above” (Greek anōthen can carry both senses). Water and Spirit evoke Israel’s prophetic renewal promises, especially Ezekiel 36: cleansing water, a new heart, and God’s Spirit within his people. Jesus’ wind/Spirit wordplay depends on Greek pneuma but reflects the broader biblical overlap of breath, wind, and spirit. The point is not a ritual puzzle; entrance into God’s kingdom requires life that God himself gives.
