When Genealogy Cannot Be Proven
Some returnees could not prove their ancestral registration, and three priestly families faced a particularly serious problem: without verifiable priestly descent, they could not safely claim the privileges of the altar. The governor therefore excludes them from eating the “most holy things” until a priest could consult with Urim and Thummim.
The point is not that God has forgotten these people or that salvation depends on paperwork. The issue is office: under Torah, priestly service belonged to a defined hereditary line. In a community rebuilding worship after decades of displacement, genealogy functioned as a safeguard against casually assuming sacred authority.
