The Breastpiece of Judgment – God’s Heart for His People
The breastpiece, square and folded double, was fastened to the ephod and adorned with twelve precious stones—each engraved with the name of one of the tribes of Israel. Set in gold, these stones symbolized value, permanence, and individual worth. The breastpiece was worn over the heart, signifying that the priest carried God’s people not only on his shoulders but close to his heart.
Also within the breastpiece were the Urim and Thummim, used for divine judgment and decision-making. These objects, while mysterious, emphasized that direction for God’s people came not from man, but from the Lord.
The breastpiece teaches us that we are treasured by God and continually before Him. We are not only carried—we are cherished.
