The Lake of Fire Is the Second Death
Revelation 21:5–8 joins the promise “I make all things new” with “It is done,” the Alpha-and-Omega title, free water of life, the conqueror’s inheritance, and the warning of the second death. The passage places gracious invitation and final judgment side by side: God freely gives life to the thirsty while rebellion that refuses Him reaches its final end.
Revelation 21:8 identifies the lake burning with fire and brimstone as “the second death.” This explains the promise first given to Smyrna that the faithful conqueror will not be hurt by the second death. Revelation distinguishes ordinary bodily death from the final judgment and locates ultimate security in belonging faithfully to Christ.
