2 Corinthians 11:2 — Betrothed to One Husband, Christ
Paul describes a godly jealousy because he has betrothed the congregation to one husband, Christ, like a pure bride awaiting presentation. He fears that, as the serpent deceived Eve, their minds may be corrupted from simple devotion to Christ. The warning is concrete: they are showing dangerous tolerance for another Jesus, another spirit, and another gospel.
Hosea’s covenant-betrothal language forms part of the Old Testament background for Paul’s betrothal of the church to Christ.
Isaiah calls the LORD Israel’s husband; Paul presents the church as betrothed to one husband, Christ.
Paul’s church betrothed to one husband, Christ, reaches a vivid canonical horizon in Revelation’s bride, the Lamb’s wife, and New Jerusalem.
