Creator, Abraham, Exodus, and Sinai
The great prayer begins with the LORD as the unique Creator of heaven, the heavenly host, earth, seas, and all life—worthy of heavenly worship. It then moves to Abraham, God's choice and covenant promise, and to the Exodus: affliction in Egypt, the sea, cloud and fire, Sinai, Sabbath, bread from heaven, and water from the rock. This is Scripture interpreting the community's present through Scripture's past. The returnees do not invent a new identity after exile; they locate themselves inside God's older acts of creation and redemption. Later Christian Scripture will identify the Son as the agent of creation and will reread Exodus provision christologically, but Nehemiah's own prayer first celebrates the LORD's covenant faithfulness.
