The LORD Speaks the Covenant Words
God speaks to Israel and begins by identifying himself through redemption: “I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.” The commandments that follow are therefore given to a people God has already delivered.
Israel is to have no other gods before the LORD and is not to make or worship carved images. The prohibition is grounded in the LORD’s exclusive covenant claim and in his description of himself as a jealous God who visits iniquity and shows steadfast covenant love across generations. Israel must not take the LORD’s name in vain.
The Sabbath command calls Israel to remember the seventh day and keep it holy. Six days are given for labor, while the seventh belongs to the LORD and extends rest to sons, daughters, servants, livestock, and the resident foreigner. Exodus 20 grounds this pattern in God’s six days of creation and seventh-day rest.
