Abyssal Locusts and the First Woe
Revelation 9:1–11 opens the abyss under the fifth trumpet and releases a terrifying locust-like host led by the destroyer. The imagery evokes Joel’s invading-locust army yet becomes explicitly demonic and abyssal in Revelation. Their power is limited by God: they may torment only for a set period and may not harm those bearing God’s seal.
Revelation 9:1–12 presents the fifth trumpet as the first announced woe. Smoke darkens the air as locust-like beings emerge from the abyss with restricted authority to torment rather than kill. The passage combines Exodus-like plague imagery, Joel-like invasion language, and apocalyptic demon imagery while repeatedly showing that destructive power remains bounded.
Revelation’s abyssal locusts transform the Exodus locust plague into terrifying agents of torment and also draw on Joel’s prophetic locust-army imagery. The later vision deliberately reworks the plague tradition rather than merely repeating the insects that consumed Egyptian crops.

Revelation's people seeking death but unable to find it closely recalls Jeremiah 8:3's death-preferred judgment.
Job describes sufferers who seek death like hidden treasure but cannot obtain the relief they desire; Revelation 9 intensifies that image into a judgment scene where people seek death and death flees from them. The verbal and emotional correspondence is strong even though Revelation does not formally cite Job.
Job personifies Abaddon/Destruction alongside Death as able to say it has heard a rumor of wisdom; Revelation later uses Abaddon as the Hebrew name of the angel of the abyss. Job supplies important vocabulary and personification background, but it does not mean Job 28 already identifies the Revelation figure.
