The Foreign-Marriage Crisis and Ezra’s Shock
Ezra has barely completed the journey when officials report a covenant crisis: Israelites—including priests and Levites—have not separated themselves from the “peoples of the lands” and their abominations, but have taken daughters from those groups for themselves and their sons. The leaders describe the result with the striking phrase “the holy seed have mingled themselves.”
The immediate biblical background is not a modern theory of racial purity. Deuteronomy 7 forbids marriage with specified Canaanite peoples because such unions would turn Israel’s children away from the LORD to other gods. Ezra likewise foregrounds “abominations”—religious and covenantal unfaithfulness. The problem is faithfulness to Israel’s covenant identity in a fragile postexilic community, not skin color.
