Ezra’s foundation scene mixes loud praise with the weeping of those who remembered the former temple; Haggai later speaks directly to people who had seen the earlier house and addresses the question of diminished glory. The prophet therefore supplies inspired interpretation for the same second-temple restoration tension Ezra narrates.

Ezra celebrates the rebuilding of the temple, while John 2 explicitly explains Jesus’ temple saying as referring to the temple of his body. The connection places the second-temple restoration inside the larger sacred-space trajectory that the Gospel ultimately centers on Christ rather than treating Ezra’s building as the final horizon.

At the second-temple foundation, Ezra’s community sings “he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever,” deliberately continuing the praise formula associated with Davidic worship in Chronicles. The formula also appears elsewhere in Scripture, so the verbal reuse is clear while exclusive dependence on one source passage cannot be proved.
