Priests, Levites, Singers, Gatekeepers, and Temple Servants
The return is organized around worship. Ezra separately counts priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers, the Nethinim (temple servants), and descendants of Solomon’s servants because rebuilding a temple without restoring its service would leave the work incomplete.
This section reconnects Ezra with the Torah and Chronicles. Priestly service depends on Aaron’s line; Levites have assigned roles; singers and gatekeepers reflect worship structures developed especially in Davidic and temple tradition. The restored community is not inventing a new religion after exile—it is attempting to reconstitute Israel’s worship under the Scriptures it has received.
