Nehemiah Finds the Genealogical Record
Nehemiah says God put it into his heart to assemble nobles, officials, and people by genealogy. He finds a register of the first group who returned from Babylon and begins reproducing it. The list closely parallels Ezra 2, showing that Nehemiah's present project is consciously tied to the earlier return. Genealogies here are not ornamental. They preserve continuity between the pre-exilic people, the first returnees, and the community now rebuilding Jerusalem. At the same time, the list reminds readers that restoration happened in stages. Nehemiah did not begin Israel's return; he entered a work already shaped by Cyrus's decree, temple rebuilding, and earlier migrations.
