God Stirs the Returnees—and Their Neighbors Supply the Journey
Cyrus’s decree does not move everyone automatically. Ezra says God also raises the spirits of family heads, priests, and Levites so that they actually leave Babylon and make the dangerous journey to Jerusalem. The same God who moves the king moves the people who must obey the opportunity he has opened.
The neighbors who remain behind contribute silver, gold, goods, animals, and freewill offerings. That detail recalls the Exodus, when Israel left Egypt with valuables supplied by the Egyptians. Ezra does not claim that this return is simply a second Exodus, but the pattern is hard to miss: God brings a captive people out, supplies them for the journey, and leads them toward worship.
