Mercy Sought and the Mystery Revealed
Daniel answers the death decree with prudence, prayer, and community. He asks Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah to seek “mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret.” The mystery is revealed in a night vision, and Daniel’s first response is worship rather than self-congratulation.
His prayer supplies a theology for the whole book: God changes times and seasons, removes kings and sets up kings, gives wisdom, reveals deep and secret things, and knows what is in darkness. Daniel 2 is therefore not chiefly an exercise in identifying empires; it is an announcement about who rules history.
