Solomon’s Wealth and Splendor
2 Chronicles 9:13–28 forms the movement “Solomon’s Wealth and Splendor.” The chronicler records the vast wealth of Solomon, including gold shields, an ivory throne overlaid with gold, and countless riches. Silver was considered of little value in Solomon’s day because of the abundance of gold. He accumulated chariots, horses, and international trade brought further prosperity.
In the book’s larger argument, Solomon’s glory reaches the nations, yet the New Testament will explicitly insist that Jesus is greater than Solomon; the chapter closes by showing the mortality of even Israel’s wisest king.
