A Lame Man Healed, Mistaken for a God, Then Paul Stoned

Acts 14:8–20 centers on a lame man healed, mistaken for a god, then paul stoned. In Lystra Paul heals a man lame from birth. The crowd interprets the sign through local Greco-Roman religion, calling Barnabas Zeus and Paul Hermes, and a priest prepares sacrifice. The missionaries tear their clothes and urge the crowd to turn from 'vanities' to the living Creator. Soon hostile visitors sway the crowd, Paul is stoned and left for dead, but he rises and reenters the city.

The wider biblical story comes into focus here. The scene is a dramatic clash of biblical Creator theology with pagan interpretation of miracles. Like Peter in Acts 3, Paul refuses divine credit; unlike Herod in Acts 12, the apostles reject worship immediately. The healed-lame-man scene also mirrors Peter’s earlier Jerusalem sign, showing one gospel through different witnesses.
